The Pastor's Word

February 1, 2026

Dear Mother Bethel Family,

Dear Beloved Congregation,

As we begin Black History Month, we honor the rich contributions of Black leaders, thinkers, and activists who have shaped our nation. Our very own founder, Bishop Richard Allen’s journey from slavery to founding our beloved church embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication that continues to inspire us.

During this month, we will gather as Family and Community at large to reflect with gratitude on the extraordinary legacy of Bishop Richard Allen. This year marks a significant moment in our nation’s history as we observe the Semiquincentennial of the United States—a time to recognize the struggles and triumphs of our forebears.

Entering this solemn season of Lent, we are called to introspection, repentance, and renewal. Lent invites us to draw closer to God through prayer, fasting, and acts of service. Bishop Allen’s commitment to justice and faith reminds us that our spiritual journey beckons us to rise above the challenges we face.

It is without question these are dark times for us as a Family as we have witnessed and are still processing the desecration of the President’s House/ Slave Memorial, the senseless violence and lack of revere for all human beings in spite of hue, background and creed and the list goes on and on. I know I say it often, but I really do believe that we must band together stronger than ever in order to counter a regime that does not.

I encourage each of you to participate in the worship and activities planned during this Black History/ Founders Day Month. Let us celebrate Bishop Allen’s life and so many others upon whose shoulders we stand and renew our commitment to his legacy as we continue our journey of faith and justice.

Let us hold one another in prayer and support as we embark on this meaningful time together.

In Christ’s Love,
Rev. Cavaness
