The Pastor's Word

August 2, 2026

Dear Mother Bethel Family,

Dear Beloved in Christ,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As we enter this new month, my heart is centered not only on what we have celebrated, but on what the
Spirit is doing among us now. In the midst of activity, responsibility, and the pressing demands of our
times, the Holy Spirit continues to call us inward—to a deeper place of renewal, restoration, and soul
care.

We live in a season that can easily exhaust the spirit. There are ongoing threats to voting rights, persistent
attempts to erase and distort our history, widening economic disparities, violence that touches our
communities, and the steady drumbeat of uncertainty. The list seems unending. As a people who have
always carried both faith and freedom work in the same hands, it is easy to become weary.

Yet Scripture reminds us that before there is effective outward work, there must be inward strengthening.
The Spirit does not merely send us out; the Spirit also calls us aside. Jesus often withdrew to pray. He
rested. He restored His soul in communion with the Father. If the Son of God practiced holy pause,
surely we must as well.

Soul care is not selfish. It is sacred.

To care for the soul is to make room for silence in a noisy world. It is to guard our joy in a climate
of outrage. It is to breathe deeply of God’s promises when anxiety tries to constrict our hope. It is to
remember that we are human beings, not merely human doings.

The work ahead of us as a church and as a people is real. We are called to remain vigilant, engaged, and
prophetic. But we cannot pour from an empty vessel. The Spirit is inviting Mother Bethel to be refreshed
and renewed—not simply emotionally stirred, but spiritually grounded. Not simply busy, but balanced.
Not simply active, but anointed.

In this season, I encourage you to:
• Recommit to daily prayer and Scripture reading.
• Protect time for rest and reflection.
• Seek community, not isolation.
• Ask for help when the weight feels heavy.
• Extend grace to yourself and to others.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our Guide, our Sustainer. The same Spirit that empowered our
ancestors through unspeakable trials is the Spirit that strengthens us now. We do not face today’s
challenges alone. We are upheld by divine presence and surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

I am grateful for the faithfulness of this congregation. I am grateful for your resilience, your generosity,
your love for God and for one another. And I am looking forward with hope to the days ahead—not
because the road will be easy, but because the Spirit is faithful.

May this month be a time of deep breathing, steady trusting, and holy renewing. May your soul find rest
in God. And may we, together, move forward strengthened from the inside out.

In Christ’s love,

Rev. Cavaness
